This morning Matt and I had a mini standoff with Tai who absolutely insisted that he was no good at drying the breakfast dishes and so wasn't going to do it.
Both sides dug their heels in and the mood on Anjulia Sue was unpleasant to say the least.
One hour later, we were at the local school to help remove everything that needed to be salvaged and brought to the new temporary school.
Tai, the exact same kid who swore he could not wash or dry any dish, was extremely helpful and worked alongside all the other cruiser volunteers, unscrewing bolts and shifting heavy shelves and chairs.
He then, without fuss or argument, helped WASH and DRY all the shelving units that were going to be used in the new school.
I don't have to tell you what parental remark was said at this point in time.
There were probably a couple dozen volunteers from about 8-10 cruising boats, and within a few hours the work was done.
It was great to meet so many other cruisers. Some arrived recently from Canada or the States. Some leave their boat here during hurricane season, a couple which got badly damaged during Dorian and are undergoing extensive repairs.
When we returned to our boat, we decided to raise anchor and move 2 nautical miles west to Manjack Cay because there was some serious wind forecasted on Saturday and we wanted to be somewhere more protected.
After setting anchor, we went ashore to the beach with SV Wildchild.
What a gorgeous little piece of paradise!
Tai and Aila took our new SUP all the way to the beach and played with Marleigh. They all attempted some SUP yoga to varying degrees of success.
Suddenly there was a big manta ray that glided past us. Whoa, did that just happen?! So cool!
Jessica had brought some shampoo with her and we washed our hair in the water.
This simple act may seem trivial but it needs mentioning because you cannot underestimate a good hair wash when you are sticky and sweaty most of the day for many days on end.
We then had a delicious stir fry meal on SV Excape with Caren and Burt.
By 8pm we were all wiped and sleep came quickly and easily.
What a day.
School playground. Best view ever! |
Tai being super helpful, unscrewing all the fixtures in the old school. |
Outside the school. It is a historic building and they will try and retain whatever they can when they do eventually rebuild. |
Inside the school. Roof and walls were badly damaged. Many residents fled to this building when the hurricane hit because it is on top of the hill. |
GT Fire station, now roofless :( |
The school sits on top of the hill. This is the view looking down. |
New school. Many hands make light work. |
Cute little coconut hut in the waternwith two swings underneath. Kids doing SUP yoga. Matt and Drew chatting boats. You can't see Jess and I, but we're washing our hair. |
