Cruising Hair Cuts

Today was proof that perfect days as cruisers actually do exist.

We didn't leave the boat once. Unless you count swimming, once in the morning and again in the hot afternoon.

I love feeling that we have absolutely everything we need on board. All the systems that we have been learning over the last several weeks seem to be working. The best part is we actually understand how they work too!

Food, water, diesel, solar panels for electricity, entertainment and each other.

After schoolwork and some boat jobs (cleaning the disgusting oil pan below the inboard engine and checking the oil level), we had a Boat Hair Don't Care Family Haircut event.

Normally Matt uses the clippers to cut his own hair, and Tai's too. Aila has been growing her bangs out for ages and so we haven't touched her hair in a long time. Me, I go to the hair salon once a year when it's time for a trim.

Today I let my family cut my hair. This was a Big Deal. But I have to say they did a good job. And I feel about 10 pounds lighter!

We had a siesta/free time after lunch, followed by some audio books and another swim. It was just so nice to do whatever we wanted with no pressure to be anywhere.

After our afternoon swim, we took turns having a bucket shower on the back deck. The fresh water had been warming in the hot sun all day so it was so refreshing to be able to rinse the salt water off after lathering our hair and body.

Within minutes in the sun and wind, we were all dry. Having short hair helped too!

The forecast said it was 41 degrees today but by being at anchor (where there is more wind) and swimming off the boat to cool off, we didn't feel the intense heat.

Tomorrow is not expected to be as hot so we will go and walk to the Sobeys grocery store, about 20 minutes away by foot. We need to replenish some fresh food and get some more milk. We'll likely go in the morning when it is not so hot.

Life slows down considerably on a boat. Things take longer to do. This is neither good nor bad. It is just a fact.

I opened the hatch to go outside and this is what I (didn't) see!

Top was fog at 8am. Bottom was fog at 9am. By 10 it was clear and HOT!

Kids had fun making a 'menu' of the different hair styles
we all could pick from. W was for women and M was for men.
There were some very interesting choices indeed.

Good morning stretch.

I had to squeeze into the engine room to try and reach the oil pan.
Here my left arm is reaching behind me in-betwewn hoses and
clamps and wires. Right about now I was wishing I had Go-Go Gadget arms.

Bag of icky and smelly oil covered rags and paper towels.
Definitely not the glamourous side of cruising.

Hair salon with the best view.

AilA pointing out a spot Daddy missed behind the ears.

Cutting Tai's hair used to be traumatic, for him and us.
He just HATED it. Now it is much easier and with a lot less squirming.

Look how much of Aila's hair came off!

Having a center cockpit meant I could perch
myself on the aft deck and cut hair.

Tai wanted his signature triangle on the top of his head.

The moment the first SNIP happened!

Swimming off the boat again. We tied some rope and noodles
so we could hold on to. Current was pretty strong this afternoon.

Found them like this in the afternoon.

Boat kids doing boat chores. After every meal, they help to
wash, dry, wipe the table and vacuum the floor.
